Self Contained Breathing Apparatus is respiratory protective equipment designed to provide the wearer with an independent supply of breathable air. Unlike air-purifying respirators that rely on filtering the surrounding atmosphere, SCBA equipment carries its own breathing air supply, making it suitable for environments where the atmosphere may be oxygen deficient, contaminated or immediately dangerous to life or health.

Typical SCBA systems incorporate a compressed-air cylinder, carrying harness or backplate, pressure-reducing system, pressure gauge, demand valve and full-face mask. Depending on the equipment configuration, different cylinder capacities, accessories and system options may also be available.
